The city is located in the southern region of Tainan county, which is the southern tip of the Jianan Plain.  There are no hills or mountains within the city, and the area is generally flat throughout.  The slight elevation of the Tainan plateau at the southwestern side reaches a height of above 30m and gradually slopes downward in the surrounding.  The second highest slope is the Sishi area in the east, which is about 10 to 50 meters in elevation and marks the boundary of the Sinhua hills.  The central area and the northern tip are the Dawan lowlands, which is a plain with an elevation below 5m.  The city borders Sinhua town to the east.  To the north and northwest, the city overlooks Hsinshih township and An-nan district of Tainan city.  The southwestern end neighbors the northern district of Tainan city across the Caitaou harbor creek.  The south is connected with eastern Tainan, Jente township, and Kueijen township.
